NatureServe IP Agreement to Protect Forestlands
Inventories Identify Imperiled Species and Habitats
NatureServe and International Paper have signed a cooperative
agreement to identify, protect and manage imperiled species and habitats on
all of IP's U.S. forestlands.
The agreement will help IP to meet the biodiversity protection provisions of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Companies seeking SFI certification must identify and protect on their forestlands all species and ecological communities assessed as imperiled or critically imperiled by NatureServe and its natural heritage member programs.
IP is the first forest products company in North America to formalize such an agreement with NatureServe. IP owns 9 million acres of forestlands in 17 states, primarily in the East.
