Not quite finding what you want in our standard online data products? NatureServe can provide custom datasets and analyses designed to meet your specific needs.
Using the data that NatureServe maintains about species and ecological communities in our central database, including the National Species Dataset of over 900,000 species location records (element occurrences) aggregated from our network of biological inventories across the U.S. and Canada, we have the ability to generate tailor-made datasets in a wide variety of scales and formats.
From simple maps to multi-jurisdictional precise species location datasets, NatureServe can provide one-stop access to information by coordinating with our network of member programs, and performing the GIS and database analyses to produce specialized data products that will meet your conservation needs.
Features & Benefits
NatureServe handles requests for both non-spatial species level information, as well as requests for locational information spanning multiple states or provinces (for requests involving a single state or province, we recommend you contact our member programs directly).
NatureServe can provide data products in a variety of formats from simple Excel, .dbf, or .txt tables, map images, and GIS layers, to more complex relational Access databases, Geodatabases, or custom Map Services.
Data Request Types and Service Fees
There are three basic types of custom data requests, and service fees depend on the scope and geographic scale of the information being requested. Non-sensitive requests require the signing of a Data Use Guidelines Agreement, while sensitive requests require a Data License Agreement that governs the terms and time period for which access to the data is granted.
- Non-Spatial Data Requests:These are requests for information that is non-spatial, such as overall lists of species with accompanying attributes, or spatial at very coarse scales such as state/province, county, or watershed distribution. Fees cover staff time needed to process the request and produce the dataset.
- Non-Precise Spatial Data Requests:These are requests for distribution data at finer geographic scales such as USGS quadrangle, 10 sq. km., 5 sq. km., or other custom grid, 12-digit watershed, etc. Depending on the scale being requested and whether named species or overall counts are needed, these types of requests may or may not be considered sensitive, and may require NatureServe to coordinate with our member programs. Fees include staff time needed to process the request and produce the dataset, as well as any local member program fees, if applicable.
- Precise Spatial Data Requests:These are requests for precise species location data aggregated from our network of natural heritage member programs. This type of data is considered sensitive and requires NatureServe to coordinate with our member programs as well as the signing of a Data License Agreement. Fees include staff time needed to process the request and produce the dataset, as well as any local member program fees.
