Biodiversity science is the foundation of NatureServe. Since establishing the first natural heritage program in 1974, we have focused on collecting, managing, analyzing and communuicating highly reliable information about biodiversity and ecosystems. We contribute to scientific understanding of our natural heritage by asking:
- Which species and ecosystems are rare? Which are imperiled?
- Where are they located?
- How is their status changing over time?
- Which species and ecosystems are priorities for management or protection?
- What actions can we take to ensure their persistance in a rapidly changing world?
