N#N#: NatureServe National Conservation Status Rank - Range Rank-A numeric range rank (e.g., N2N3) is used to indicate the range of uncertainty about the status of the species or community. Ranges cannot skip more than one rank (e.g., NU should be used rather than N1N4). For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status
N?: NatureServe National Conservation Status Rank -Unranked-Nation conservation status not yet assessed. For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.
N1: NatureServe National Conservation Status Rank (NRank) - Critically Imperiled-Critically imperiled in the nation because of extreme rarity (often 5 or fewer occurrences) or because of some factor(s) such as very steep declines making it especially vulnerable to extirpation from the nation For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status
N2: NatureServe National Conservation Status Rank (NRank) - Imperiled-Imperiled in the nation because of rarity due to very restricted range, very few populations (often 20 or fewer), steep declines, or other factors making it very vulnerable to extirpation from the nation. For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.
N3: NatureServe National Conservation Status Rank (NRank) -Vulnerable-Vulnerable in the nation due to a restricted range, relatively few populations (often 80 or fewer), recent and widespread declines, or other factors making it vulnerable to extirpation. For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.
N4: NatureServe National Conservation Status Rank (NRank) -Apparently Secure-Uncommon but not rare; some cause for long-term concern due to declines or other factors. For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.
N5: NatureServe National Conservation Status Rank (NRank) - Secure-Common, widespread, and abundant in the nation. For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.

Name Used in Concept Reference : The name applied to this Element in the concept reference. The concept reference together with the name used in that reference serves as a unique identifier for the Element, especially in cases where a single concept reference describes the circumscription of more than one Element.

NatureServe Status Factors Author: The name(s) of the principal person(s) who prepared this edition of the ranking factors information. Note: Field not edited for consistency of style or content.

NatureServe Status Factors Edition Date: Date of most recent major changes to the global ranking factors information for the element.

Nation: National distribution for Canada and the United States. Note: Species level information is maintained for the United States and Canada but may not be complete for some animal groups. For more information see Distribution Sources.

National Conservation Status Date: The date the conservation status rank, developed by NatureServe and the Natural Heritage Network, was originally entered or last changed, revised, and/or reaffirmed . For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.

National Conservation Status: The conservation status of a species or community from a national perspective, characterizing the relative rarity or imperilment of the element. Developed by NatureServe and its natural heritage member programs. For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.

National Conservation Status Factors Authors: The name of the principal person(s) who prepared this version of the ranking factors information.

National Rank: (National Conservation Status Rank) For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.

National Status For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.

Native: The species is present in the nation or subnation without direct or indirect human intervention, and is present within its native range and natural dispersal potential.

Natural Heritage Network: For more information see About Us

Natural/Semi-Natural:Describes vegetation that has not been planted or treated with an annual management or manipulation regime. Only Natural Ecological systems are reported.

NatureServe: NatureServe. NatureServe is a non-profit conservation organization that provides the scientific information and tools needed to help guide effective conservation action. NatureServe and its network of natural heritage programs are the leading source for information about rare and endangered species and threatened ecosystems. For more information see About Us

NatureServe Conservation Status: The conservation status ranking system developed by NatureServe and its natural heritage member programs. Conservation status ranks are assigned, reviewed, and revised according to standard criteria. For plant and animal species these ranks provide an estimate of extinction risk, while for ecological communities they provide an estimate of the risk of extinction. For more information see About Us

NB: Abbreviation for the province of New Brunswick (Canada).
NC: Abbreviation for the state of North Carolina (United States).
ND: Abbreviation for the U.S. state of North Dakota (United States).
NE: Abbreviation for the state of Nebraska (United States).

Nearshore: Coastal subtidal marine habitats, extending outward as far as wave action and light penetration to the bottom.

Nectarivore: Taxa that feed on nectar or sap.

NF: Abbreviation for Newfoundland, which makes up part of the province Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada).
NH: Abbreviation for the state of New Hampshire (United States).
NH: NatureServe Conservation Status Rank - Possibly Extirpated (Historical)-Element occurred historically in the nation, and there is some expectation that it may be rediscovered. Its presence may not have been verified in the past 20 years. An element would become NH without such a 20-year delay if the only known occurrences in a nation were destroyed or if it had been extensively and unsuccessfully looked for. Upon verification of an extant occurrence, NH-ranked elements would typically receive an N1 rank. The NH rank should be reserved for elements for which some effort has been made to relocate occurrences, rather than simply using this rank for all elements not known from verified extant occurrences. For more information see NatureServe Conservation Status.
NF: Abbreviation for Newfoundland, which makes up part of the province Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada).
NJ: Abbreviation for the state of New Jersey (United States).
NM: Abbreviation for the state of New Mexico (United States).
NN: Abbreviation for the Navajo Nation.
NNA: NatureServe National Conservation Status Rank — Not Applicable — A conservation status rank is not applicable because the species is not a suitable target for conservation activities.
NNR: NatureServe National Conservation Status Rank — Not Applicable — Nation conservation status not yet assessed.

Nocturnal: Characteristically active during darkness.

Nomenclatural Author: Animals: The authority who published the original description for a particular scientific name and the year of the author's publication. Plants: The name(s) or conventional abbreviation(s) of the author(s) of the scientific name. Note: Authors of plant names not edited for standardized abbreviations.

Non-Migrant: Data provided in species reports. Indicates some populations do not make significant seasonal migrations. Juvenile dispersal is not considered a migration.

Nonstandard Element: For more information see Classifying Elements of Biodiversity.

Nonvascular Plants: Plants with tissues or vessels to carry water, minerals, etc., such as mosses, fungi, and lichens.

Non-Vegetated (< 10% vascular cover): Ecological system with low total cover of vascular plants (\"sparsely vegetated\" or \"barren\"). Abiotic substrate features are dominant; vegetation is scattered to nearly absent and generally restricted to areas of concentrated resources. Total vascular vegetation cover is typically less than 10% and greater than 0%. These include systems dominated by non-vascular plants included mosses or lichens. Areas with high cover of crustose lichen and no other vegetation are included here. (See Vegetated).

Notes (Occurrence Specifications): Notes related to the current version of these occurrence specifications.

Notes (Population Viability Criteria): Notes related to the current version of these population/occurrence viability criteria.

Botany species distribution data has been recorded separately for the former Northwest Territories districts of Franklin, Keewatin, and Mackenzie. Botany data approximates these new units as follows: (1) All species recorded for Franklin or Keewatin are now represented as Nunavut, (2) All species recorded for Mackenzie are now represented as Northwest Territories.
