| VA:
Abbreviation for the state of Virginia (United States). |
| Vegetated (> 10% vascular cover): Ecological system with > 10% cover of vascular plants. (See Non-Vegetated). |
|
Vegetation
Summary:
Summary description of the characteristic leaf type and phenology, species composition, structure and variability of vegetation.
|
Vegetation Variability
Range of variability in structure and species composition among occurrences of this community. |
|
Vertebrate:
For more information see Classification
of Vertebrates and Invertebrates.

Watershed
Code:
The 8-digit code (HUC-8) from the US Geological Survey Hydrologic Unit Map for each
watershed where the species is located. For more information on US Geological Survey Hydrologic Unit Maps see http://water.usgs.gov/GIS/huc.html
|
|
Watershed
Name:
The name corresponding to the US Geological Survey Hydrologic Unit for
each watershed where the species is located. For more information on US Geological Survey Hydrologic Unit Maps see http://water.usgs.gov/GIS/huc.html
|
|
Watershed
Region:
The 2-digit code (HUC-2) from the US Geological Survey Hydrologic Unit Map for each region where the species is located.
Regions are the first level of classification of US Geological Survey Hydrologic Units which divides the Nation into 21 major geographic areas, or regions.
The first two digits of the watershed code (HUC-8 code) specify the region.
For more information on US Geological Survey Hydrologic Unit Maps including a map of the watershed regions see http://water.usgs.gov/GIS/huc.html |
| Weight:
Data provided in species reports. Approximate weight of an adult
in grams. |
| Wetland: Wetland ecological systems were defined following a non-regulatory definition for wetlands, emphasizing three important attributes: (1) the hydrology is such that there is some degree of flooding or soil saturation; (2) the vegetation is composed of plants adapted to grow in water or in a soil or substrate that is occasionally oxygen deficient due to saturation (hydrophytes); and (3) the soils are those saturated long enough during the growing season to produce oxygen-deficient conditions in the upper part of the soil, which commonly includes the major part of the root zone of plants (hydric soils). |

Wetland
Indicator:
Defines whether or not this is a wetland or an upland Level 5 unit (Formation).

|
Woodland:
Open stands of trees at least 6 m tall, with crowns often
not interlocking; tree canopy discontinuous (often clumped),
averaging between two-thirds and 40% overall cover (at 40%
the average diameter of a tree crown equals the average distance
between crowns); shrub layer often poorly developed or present
only in gaps in the canopy. Forest edge species (i.e., those
dependent on a break in the canopy rather than on forest per
se) are included in this category. For more information
see Classification
of Ecological Communities.
