You can set
the number of records and the number of columns that will appear
on each results page. From any NatureServe Explorer search page, click the
arrow to the right of Site Index,
then scroll and click on User preferences.
These must be set on a search page. If you set user preferences
when you are already on a Results page, you will not see a change
in the display until you complete a new search.
List
will display three columns. For plant and animal searches and for
ecological community searches, the columns are Browse (Unique
ID), Scientific Name/Common Name, and Choose a Report. For more
information see below.
Detail
will list five columns.
The results
page for a species search with five columns:

(Unique ID) |
indicates
whether the record has been selected and provides the Natural
Heritage Network ID for the plant or animal. When the results
first appear, all records will be have a check in this column.
To shorten your list of records, click Deselect
All at the top or bottom of the table. Then, click
each record you want to keep, and click Show
Selected Only to create a list of records with
only those you chose from the original results.

lists the scientific and common names for the plants and animals.

| Status |
lists
the species' conservation status as designated by the Natural
Heritage Network, the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA), and
the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada
(COSEWIC). |
| Distribution |
lists United States & Canada using the standard two-letter abbreviations
for the U.S. states and Canadian provinces where the species
has been identified. |
| Image Available |
contains a camera icon if an image is available . |
Viewing results
for ecological communities
A detailed results
page for an ecological community search contains the following columns:

(Unique ID) |
indicates

| Common
Name/Translated Scientific Name |
lists
the common and translated scientific names for the species.
A translated scientific name is the English name for the association
based on common names for the nominal plant species. Remember,
a plant species can have several common names, any of which
can be used here. Not all associations will have translated
scientific names. |

Conservation Status Rank |
lists
the species' conservation status as designated by the Natural
Heritage Network. Distribution: United States & Canada using
the standard two-letter abbreviations for the U.S. states and
Canadian provinces where the ecological community has been identified. |
| Classification
Code |
lists
standard abbreviation for community classification. |
| Image Available |
contains
a camera icon if an image is available. |
Searches using
settings with fewer records and columns may be completed faster
and the results will be easier for the browser to handle as you
review them.
