Description:

Abstract:

Plant pollinators play enormous ecological and economic roles in natural and cultivated landscapes. Recent studies suggest that some species of pollinators are suffering sharp population declines, highlighting the need to increase our understanding of pollinator natural history, population status, and distribution. Understanding this need, the USGS asked NatureServe to develop detailed range maps of five pollinator species, selected using several criteria (each species is a true pollinator, has a wide distribution, pollinates a broad range of plants, is not domesticated, is representative geographically and taxonomically, and is well known).
This dataset contains a distribution map for Anna’s hummingbird (Calypte anna), an important hummingbird pollinator of the west coast, currently ranging from southeast Alaska south to northwestern Mexico. Some populations are migratory while others are sedentary. The range has expanded dramatically northward over the past century. For example, the northern extent of the range in 1930 was San Francisco.

Purpose: To produce a high-quality and up to date map of the distribution of Anna’s Hummingbird (Calypte anna).

Logical Consistency Report:

Although we feel we did the best job possible to produce an accurate database, some errors surely remain in the data. Our knowledge of Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) distribution continues to improve, so this map may be out of date by the time you see it.
Please alert Bruce Young (bruce_young@natureserve.org) of any errors you detect in the data or of newly published information that would serve to update the map. We will be constantly reviewing the scientific literature to keep abreast of taxonomic and distributional changes. Updated map will be available for download at NatureServe’s website (www.natureserve.org).

Completeness Report:

We endeavored to obtain comprehensive data on the distribution of this species. We contacted all major museums and significant ornithological databases covering the range. Two important portals we used, in addition to contacting museums directly, were GBIF (http://www.gbif.org/) and ORNIS (http://olla.berkeley.edu/ornisnet/). In sum, we compiled over 120,000 records. After removing duplicate records from the same locality, we worked with 12,600 unique records. The resulting range map depicts the range where the species regularly breeds, overwinters, and wanders. It does not include records from where the species has occurred as a vagrant.

Lineage:

Process Step:

Process Description:

Version 1.0
To provide an accurate picture of the current range of this species, we modified the map provided by Russell (1996) (Russell, S.M. 1996. Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna). In The Birds of North America, No. 226 (A. Poole and F. Gill, editors). The Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, and The American Ornithologists' Union, Washington, D.C. 24 pp. Online. Available: http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/species/226) and previously digitized by Ridgely et al. (2007) (Ridgely, R. S., T. F. Allnutt, T. Brooks, D. K. McNicol, D. W. Mehlman, B. E. Young, and J. R. Zook. 2007. Digital Distribution Maps of the Birds of the Western Hemisphere, version 3.0. NatureServe, Arlington, Virginia, USA. Available: http://www.natureserve.org/getData/birdMaps.jsp). We then compiled locality specimen and observational records (see “Completeness” for details, “Credit” for full list of institutions contributing data). For records without geographical coordinates, we subsampled approximately one record per county and georeferenced using Google Earth (http://earth.google.com). We subsequently divided records into breeding (Dec-May, according to Russell 1996) and nonbreeding (June-November). Anna’s Hummingbird occurs year-round almost everywhere it breeds, so the breeding area is also where it is a permanent resident. We then overlaid the records on the existing range map and adjusted the range map where needed to reflect the new information. Because the species is rapidly expanding its range and few collectors are still active, we relied heavily on observational data. We were cautious in interpreting the observational data, though, and only adjusted ranges where there were multiple records or highly reliable records such as those derived from a breeding bird atlas program.

The species also wanders widely outside of the breeding season and even during the breeding season months in Texas, adjacent Mexico, and coastal Louisiana. We depicted this area by modifying the Russell (1996) map based on the new observational data available to us.

The final map shows where the species is a permanent resident, non breeding resident, and migrant/wanderer.

Due to institutional restrictions on redistribution of the locality information provided to us, we cannot make the distribution database available to the public.

Overview Description:

Entity and Attribute Overview:

The ArcView shape files contain the known range of the species. Ranges may be depicted as polygons where a species is widespread, as points where there are isolated records, or both. The file naming convention is as follows. POLYGON files are named: gggg_ssss_pl.xxx where gggg is the genus name, ssss is the specific name, and xxx are the extensions (e.g., shp, dbf) that ArcView attaches to shapefiles. POINT files are named: gggg_ssss_pt.xxx. DBF files accompanying each polygon contain taxonomic information, distribution status, sources and other details about the maps (see Data Attributes).
