Description:

Abstract:

Plant pollinators play enormous ecological and economic roles in natural and cultivated landscapes. Recent studies suggest that some species of pollinators are suffering sharp population declines, highlighting the need to increase our understanding of pollinator natural history, population status, and distribution. Understanding this need, the USGS asked NatureServe to develop detailed range maps of five pollinator species, selected using several criteria (each species is a true pollinator, has a wide distribution, pollinates a broad range of plants, is not domesticated, is representative geographically and taxonomically, and is well known).
This dataset contains a distribution map for the Eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus), an important insect pollinator of the eastern United States, ranging from North Dakota east through southern Ontario to southern New England and south to the Gulf coast

Purpose: To produce a high-quality and up to date map of the distribution of the Eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus).

Logical Consistency Report:

Although we feel we did the best job possible to produce an accurate database, some errors surely remain in the data. Our knowledge of Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) distribution continues to improve, so this map may be out of date by the time you see it.
Please alert Bruce Young (bruce_young@natureserve.org) of any errors you detect in the data or of newly published information that would serve to update the map. We will be constantly reviewing the scientific literature to keep abreast of taxonomic and distributional changes. Updated map will be available for download at NatureServe’s website (www.natureserve.org).

Completeness Report:

The range map depicts the current known range of the species, excluding hybrids. To our knowledge, the map is complete.
In most cases, locations beyond the general range were not mapped if based on single specimens or images and no other individuals are known from the area despite survey work. This process may result in some outlying resident populations not being mapped. This species is a habitat generalist and probably an opportunistic colonist that can colonize and persist using secondary food plants such as species of Prunus and ashes that are widespread to the west of the primary food plants (Magnoliaceae). A site may be colonized quickly as habitat conditions improve and abandoned as habitat becomes unsuitable (Paul Opler, pers. comm.).

Process Step:

Process Description:

Version 1.0
We derived this map from Internet and literature sources. First, we developed a database of counties in which the species has been reported to occur. The basis for the database was the information provided on the Butterflies and Moths of North America (BAMONA) website (http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/). Then we modified the county database according to recent research clarifying the taxonomic separation between P. glaucus and P. canadensis (Canadian tiger swallowtail) and P. rutulus (western tiger swallowtail). Although we attempted to exclude hybrid populations (Scriber et al. 2003, 2007; Scriber and Ording, 2005), it was not possible to fully distinguish these records in New York and northern Pennsylvania. The Eastern tiger swallowtail has well documented annual degree-day requirements that were mapped by Scriber (1999). These maps were also used as guidance for northern limits. If sufficient degree-days are not accumulated during the growing season the obligate second brood fails and the population dies out--which sets a very strict northern limit for potential residency. However, (see Scriber and Ording 2005), the range, or at least the hybrid zone, is expanding northeastward with recent warmer summers. Since the map is intended to show resident populations, obvious or suspected strays were not mapped.

Finally, we drew an outline encompassing the counties where the species has been reported. There were two outlying counties (in North Dakota and Oklahoma) with verified records that we depicted as isolated points due to the lack of records from intervening counties.

Overview Description:

Entity and Attribute Overview:

The ArcView shape files contain the known range of the species. Ranges may be depicted as polygons where a species is widespread, as points where there are isolated records, or both. The file naming convention is as follows. POLYGON files are named: gggg_ssss_pl.xxx where gggg is the genus name, ssss is the specific name, and xxx are the extensions (e.g., shp, dbf) that ArcView attaches to shapefiles. POINT files are named: gggg_ssss_pt.xxx. COUNTY files are named: gggg_ssss_cty.xxx. DBF files accompanying each polygon contain taxonomic information, distribution status, sources and other details about the maps (see Data Attributes).
