Description:

Abstract:

Plant pollinators play enormous ecological and economic roles in natural and cultivated landscapes. Recent studies suggest that some species of pollinators are suffering sharp population declines, highlighting the need to increase our understanding of pollinator natural history, population status, and distribution. Understanding this need, the USGS asked NatureServe to develop detailed range maps of five pollinator species, selected using several criteria (each species is a true pollinator, has a wide distribution, pollinates a broad range of plants, is not domesticated, is representative geographically and taxonomically, and is well known).
This dataset contains a distribution map for the Hermit sphinx (Lintneria eremitus), an important insect pollinator of the eastern United States and southern Canada. Both old and recent records suggest this species was and is widespread in the northeastern USA and adjacent parts of Canada, mostly in Ontario, but occurs mostly in the mountains south of Pennsylvania. It also is widespread from Michigan through northwestern Indiana and the northern prairie region south through much of Missouri. This species is a documented pollinator of the endangered orchid Platanthera leucophaea (Pollack, 2006, Endangered Species Bull.). Platanthera orchids appear to require sphinx moths for cross pollination. S. eremitus because it is non-migratory, easily identified, and its food plants (bergamots and other mints) likely occur in prairies where these orchids grow.

Sphinx moths have been popular with collectors since the 1800s, providing both current and historic specimen records. This sphinx is also often photographed as both adults and larvae in gardens and images easily found on the Internet (usually as Sphinx eremitus). However it does not come readily to lights so collectors sometimes overlook it.

Purpose: To produce a high-quality and up to date map of the distribution of the Hermit sphinx (Lintneria eremitus).

Logical Consistency Report:

Although we feel we did the best job possible to produce an accurate database, some errors surely remain in the data. Our knowledge of the Hermit Sphinx (Lintneria eremitus) distribution continues to improve, so this map may be out of date by the time you see it.
Please alert Bruce Young (bruce_young@natureserve.org) of any errors you detect in the data or of newly published information that would serve to update the map. We will be constantly reviewing the scientific literature to keep abreast of taxonomic and distributional changes. Updated map will be available for download at NatureServe’s website (www.natureserve.org).

Completeness Report:

The range map depicts the current known range of the species. To our knowledge, the map is complete. The species may occur along the Gulf coast between Texas and Florida but we were unable to locate any documentation for its occurrence there so we chose not to include that area in the distribution map.

Process Step:

Process Description:

Version 1.0
To produce this map, we first compiled a database of counties with confirmed records and then drew a polygon to encompass these counties (excluding outliers). See Credit for list of museums consulted. Our range map is rather similar to the Opler et al. (2009) map and is conservative because we do not fill in gaps where there are few or no records. For example we do not follow Tuttle (2007) in extending the range south from Missouri to Louisiana. The largest gap in the range is most of Ohio and Indiana. We corresponded with Thomas Carr and James Vargo, active Lepidopterists very familiar with moth records in those states. All records they were aware of are mapped. While Tuttle (2007) extrapolated a larger range through the Midwest, we do not do so based on a historic record near Cincinnati. The Hermit Sphinx probably did occur widely in the Ohio Valley before the area was largely drained, filled, clear-cut and converted to farmland in the 1800s. Similarly the heavily agricultural Piedmont is problematic. There are records at the extreme northern end, i.e. old ones for the New Jersey and Pennsylvania portions, and both old and current records in Delaware, and Brimley (1938) had records for two Piedmont counties in North Carolina far to the south. We checked with the Virginia Natural Heritage Program and they cannot verify it for their Piedmont, and we are unwilling to extrapolate our polygon to include tens of thousands of square miles of intervening area that lacks any records. We maintain the Manitoba, Canada, record (Clark 1929) based on Hodges (1971).

We contacted Vernon Brou about the published and very disjunct Louisiana record. Three were collected at the same place in one year and no others in that state in more than 30 years of intensive sampling. We agree with Brou that this was a transient population probably from a single vagrant female. We suspect that the northern Mississippi specimen was also a vagrant. The adults are powerful fliers and could probably move 50-100 miles in a single night.

Overview Description:

Entity and Attribute Overview:

The ArcView shape files contain the known range of the species. Ranges may be depicted as polygons where a species is widespread, as points where there are isolated records, or both. The file naming convention is as follows. POLYGON files are named: gggg_ssss_pl.xxx where gggg is the genus name, ssss is the specific name, and xxx are the extensions (e.g., shp, dbf) that ArcView attaches to shapefiles. POINT files are named: gggg_ssss_pt.xxx. COUNTY files are named: gggg_ssss_cty.xxx. DBF files accompanying each polygon contain taxonomic information, distribution status, sources and other details about the maps (see Data Attributes).
