PROGRAM BACKGROUND:

The Maine Natural Areas Program (MNAP) conducts ongoing statewide inventories and monitoring efforts to document the location, condition and status of Maine’s biota. The Program maintains a comprehensive data management system consisting of computer, map and manual files used primarily for planning and protection efforts for rare plant species and exemplary natural communities.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The intern will assist MNAP ecologists and data management staff with:

  • Transcribing information about the location and status of rare plants and natural    communities to include researching species for proper mapping protocol purposes, data entry into a GIS database and quality control for accuracy
  • Entering ecological information into computer files and GIS databases
  • Collecting and linking landowner information to rare plant and natural community locations
  • Maintaining and organizing rare plant and natural community files, to include
       organization and filing in the Geographic Management Files
  • Summarizing field survey data
  • Assisting with special projects as needed

The internship will be based at the MNAP office in Augusta. This position is up to 40 hours/week and pays $10.00/hour.

QUALIFICATIONS :

It is desired that the intern will have the following skills or comparable experience:

  • Biological/botanical background.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Knowledge of GIS and ArcMap 9.0 is desirable.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work in an office environment.
