Changes and Updates
Latest version: 5h_001 (2003-09-17)
Major Updates
- Fixed bug in the ET symbolic fields CONCEPT_REFERENCE and D_CLASSIFICATION_LEVEL_DESC that caused the NAMESOURCE value of "NS-BIOTICS" to fail conversion. For D_CLASSIFICATION_LEVEL_DESC, the value returns the word "fail" for animal records, and applies the default conversion logic for plant records; for CONCEPT_REFERENCE, the default logic is applied instead.
Known Issues
- INI file size limit (bug)--if the INI file (e.g., hdms_xml.ini file) is too big (over 32 k), export properties will not load properly and export may crash to the debugger. This bug will not be fixed since it is in the Biotics Core module. Work-around--split the ini file into multiple files of smaller size and/or get rid of extraneous comments and specs that are not being used anyway. NEW - 2003-02-14
- UID end-to-end testing has not been completed; future fixes may be required.
- Installation is still in too many pieces; software update not easy.
- Optional Field Configuration Documentation still sketchy. -- will probably come in a separate document.
Version: 5g_003 (2003-07-30)
This is a documentation update only. If you download this, and you have already installed version 5g, you simply have to unzip the package in order to access the up-to-date documents.
Major Updates
- Removed 4 EORANK values now deemed invalid (F?, H?, X?, and U) and added one new valid value (E?). [specifically, updated the custom.cfg and domain.cfg files--see the hcfg007a.zip file and the associated pages, BadEorank and BasicEoRank]
Version: 5g_002 (2003-03-14)
This is a documentation update only. If you download this, and you have already installed version 5g, you simply have to unzip the package in order to access the up-to-date documents.
Version: 5g_001 (2003-03-06)
This is a documentation update only. If you download this, and you have already installed version 5g, you simply have to unzip the package in order to access the up-to-date documents.
- Updated the 'Snapshot Setup Instructions.doc' (was actually mistakenly excluded from the 5g package). This document has been updated to address some minor points of confusion.
- Updated the InstallConversionSoftware page
- (a) to be consistent with Biotics 4 Exchanger (updated Java Runtime Engine release (1.4.1_02))
- (b) to clarify what to do with the backup files during a software update.
- For internal use, added a KillBcd link with directions on how to execute it.
Version: 5g (2003-02-27)
Major Updates
- Included HDMS.QC_PATCH_2003-02-25 (updated 2003-02-27 to hard-code the report filenames)
- HDMS.QC -- fixed typo for NESTEOS/NPROTEOS (lines 104, 119)
- HDMS.QC.REPORTS -- modified PDISK to be more clear about what the user should type when prompted.
- HDMS.QC.PLUS -- modified PDISK to be more clear about what the user should type when prompted.
- Updated DICT.VOC*HDMS_GCOMNAME (was kicking out if GCOMNAME was blank--should also evaluate NCOMNAME for OTHER_GLOBAL_COMMON_NAMES)--Ecology Pilot fix; still works for English Subnational
Enhancements
- Documentation: modified list of XML files on PrepDataForPerlConverter page to show which are required.
- Modified QC process to require running the MissingGname, MissingNname, and MissingSname QC's first before running the batch commands.
- Margaret Ormes updated documentation based on issues raised in conference call.
Version: 5f (2003-02-12)
Major updates
- Updated LOAD_CONFIG to stop posting a 1-second message for each config loaded. (Maybe it's just me, but that was really bugging me...)
- New hdms\java\TO_CONV.BAT file (useful for doing the optional field conversions); enhanced to facilitate export to ms access & other text formats that are incompatible with BCD's character set.
- Cosmetic changes to hdms\ini\EXPORT.BCD (got rid of Ecology Pilot & Central BCD stuff)
Enhancements
- Added Access_export_flat (callable via ns_export) to be compatible with access_export.

Version: 5e (2003-01-29)
Major updates
- For Ecology Pilot, took out the automatic SYN file rebuild during install. It now prompts the user to rebuild if desired.
- Smoothed out the primary installation process, and cleaned up the logging method; reduced log entries to errors/warnings.
- Error log is now stored in the run directory (c:\temp\bcd2hdms).
Version: 5d_01 (2003-01-28)
Major updates
- Took out the Biotics Core NS Module update with the ADJUNCT_ADDER. Now, the bcd2hdms005d_01.zip file contains all the software and configuration files EXCEPT the core001c_adjunct.zip file. The ADJUNCT_ADDER has been updated for a critical bug fix and should be applied as a patch to ALL BCD Systems that have had any version of the ADJUNCT_ADDER installed (all systems with Biotics 3.1, or EO.MO, or the data conversion software). See the InstallAdjunctAdder2003 page for more details.
- GET_BCD_INFO causes an error each initial execution (after logging in). Workaround: execute it once via any symbolic field that relies upon it (e.g., LIST SYN VALID_KEY), then for the rest of that session, it will work correctly. This is a core program installed with the ADJUNCT_ADDER_2001 utility. For the most part, it should be fine, but when called from a symbolic field, results can be unexpected if it has not been initialized for that session. Probably the installation of the adjunct should have included putting this call into the BCD logon script. This has been fixed in ADJUNCT_ADDER_2003 update.UPDATED: 2003-01-27
Version: 5d (2003-01-24)
Major updates
- EOR*EO_UID hidden column has been moved from reserved position 77 to new position 101.
Bug fixes
- CREATE_AUDIT no longer crashes to the debugger if it encounters an EOR record that has no audit data.
- The 'CHANGE.DATE.INITIALS' has been corrected in the HDMS.QC.PLUS Batch file.
- If a data field contained a text mark and it is a multi-valued field, each part (delimited by the text mark) was being treated as a separate value, causing the final converted value to have a pipe character where the text mark existed. The text mark will now be removed prior to the export in the EXPORT_XML program.
Version: 5c (2003-01-16)
Major updates
- Refactored REBUILD_SYN_FILE to reduce reliance on a static system.
- Refactored documentation to be more concise and compartmentalized.
- Modified documentation to reduce common confusion points--still needs more work
- Added SELECT_MATCH utility as a convenience
- Added SRankFails QC
- Added MissingSitename & MissingManame QC
- Added EorMissingNation QC
- Removed NonNumericEonum from HDMS.QC batch file
- Refactored batch files to make them less confusing
- Added various changes to support BCD-HDMS Data Exchange (DX) process repercussions on final Data Conversion.
-- Special handling for NAMESOURCE after BCD-HDMS DX
-- UID Processing
-- UID Exports
- Updated configuration: hcfg006h
-- Added UID fields to the export templates (hdms_es.ini & hdms_xml.ini)
Bug fixes
- syn_missing_classification bug fixed: apparently running a select on a brand new file doesn't work quite the way you'd expect. So, when you first install the software, then turn around and immediately execute the HDMS.QC batch file, the syn_missing_classification would end up with every records in SYN on the bad list, even though they were not supposed to be there. This should be handled by the install program, but it's not....
