BCD2HDMS Home
This is the jumping off point for getting your BCD data ready for the data conversion to Biotics 4
If you're running this, you're expected to be able to log into the BCD in question, and be able to get around in it (and have READ ACCESS to all applicable data files). There's another page for ExportDataFromBiotics that covers how to export the BIOTICS data that goes with the BCD in question (if any). And YES, you have to dump some data from BIOTICS (data which are required to load some other data that comes from the BCD). It's a delicate dance.
The "pre-steps"
- Get the latest BCD2HDMS software (as of this writing,
it is BCD2HDMS005h_002.ZIP, and you should be able to get
it at https:\\transfer.natureserve.org\download\longterm\Biotics\bcd_qc
)
YES--GO GET THE LATEST SOFTWARE (today!). If you go
to the ftp site and you see that the latest file is the file
you have, great! However, the software is a work in progress.
Bugs are constantly being fixed; additional QC procedures are
being added and improved--all to make your life (our lives)
easier! If you are preparing for your final conversion, it is
even more important that you do not use a stale version of this
software.
- NEW! If you are doing a fresh install,
or if your last installation was dated 2003-01-24 or earlier,
get the latest Core Module software (as of this writing, it
is core001c_adjunct.zip, and you should be able to get
it at the same link above). You can check your last installation
date by running the following command in the BCD at TCL:
LIST BCDSYS.CONTROL STARTING 'BCD2HDMS' JUSTLEN
50 BY @ID
If the date at the end of the item at the bottom of the list
is '2003-01-24' or earlier, you need this update.
- Unzip the software package to the C:\TEMP subdirectory--preferably
on the stand-alone machine that the BCD snapshot will reside.
This should create a BCD2HDMS subdirectory under C:\TEMP.
- If you have BIOTICS 3.1 installed, do a complete reconciliation
between BIOTICS and BCD, then FREEZE ACTIVITY ON BOTH SYSTEMS.
This step is necessary only if you are preparing
for an HDMS Data Conversion--if you are installing software only
to execute data QC procedures, you may omit the step to freeze
activity in the BIOTICS application.
- Open the c:\temp\bcd2hdms\index.htm document -- This
is your starting point, and it will lead you to a working copy
of this document that you are looking at. In a non-working copy,
the links below will not function, and are listed here as a quick
reference only.
The "Quick Start" steps (click on the "name" of each step to get the the instructions to complete that step).
This software is used for both preliminary QC as well as final QC and conversion. For preliminary QC, do the steps indicated in blue and for the final conversion, do all the steps indicated in green in the order specified. Technically, the Adjunct Adder 2003 and Biotics Core Module only need to be installed once, but it will not cause any harm to repeat these steps.
