Mapping of Office Depot's Forest Footprint

NatureServe has begun to map and document Office Depot's 'forest footprint' in collaboration with some of the company's largest paper suppliers. This innovative mapping effort forms the geographic component of a broader Alliance objective to trace Office Depot's paper through the entire 'supply chain' from woodlot to retail store. Together the 'footprint' and ?supply chain? work provide the fundamental building blocks for assessing and minimizing Office Depot?s environmental impact.

To better evaluate Office Depot's forest footprint, NatureServe is identifying the company's source of paper, evaluating the associated impacts on biodiversity, and making this information available for forest managers and landowners. This hypothetical image indicates areas of higher forest removal (dark shades), locations of rare species and ecological communities, and paper mills. By intersecting harvest areas with rare species, we are able to target areas to increase outreach to foresters, landowners, and loggers.

Steps taken to map and document Office Depot's footprint include:

  • Identify mills within the current Office Depot footprint by acquiring and developing information on paper suppliers.
  • Identify mill locations and, to the extent possible, general areas of procurement for each mill.
  • Revise/update map of Office Depot 'footprint' by using forest companies procurement data.
  • Develop relevant sustainability information attributes on mills (e.g., certification and chain of custody status, status of existing biodiversity data for procurement area) using one or two companies as 'pilots' for obtaining and documenting this information.
  • Overlay biodiversity data and develop lists and informational materials of relevant rare species and habitats of concern.
  • Promote accessibility of biodiversity data and management considerations through NatureServe Explorer.
  • Develop web services to allow screening of private lands for rare species locations.
  • Develop or enhance existing training programs for mill procurement staff, loggers, and landowners within the area of influence.
