Species at Risk on DOD Installations > Installations
Department of Defense installations with the highest numbers and densities of species at risk are shown in Figure 5a and 5b, respectively. As noted earlier, installations with particularly high numbers and densities of species at risk are located in central and southern California, Hawaii, and Florida. Schofield Barracks Military Reservation, Makua Military Reservation, Lualualei Naval Reservation, and Haiku Naval Reservation in Hawaii and Homestead Air Force Base in Florida are notable because they rank in the top 20 installations for both total number and density of at-risk species.

In a further analysis on DOD installations, NatureServe found twenty-four species that are restricted to only one DOD installation. Overall, 82 species at risk have at least half (>50%) of their occurrences residing on DOD installations. Due to the sensitive nature of this information (e.g. identity of imperiled species with very restricted ranges), NatureServe is not able to reveal the identity of these species in this public report, but we did make this information available to DOD natural resource managers. These managers have a unique opportunity and important responsibility to conserve and protect these species with very restricted ranges because these species are so highly dependent on military management activities.
