NatureServe Vista: A Tool for Good Planning

March 16, 2009 — NatureServe announces the release of NatureServe Vista 2.0, now available for free public download. This is our third generation of NatureServe Vista, which is a very powerful and flexible tool for conducting conservation planning and integrating conservation with other assessment and planning activities such as land use, transportation, energy, and natural resources management. For those electing to purchase support services from NatureServe we offer live and on online helpdesk technical support, training programs, and consulting tailored to fit your needs and resources. Link to the web pages for descriptions of our services and information on how to contact us.

NatureServe Vista 2.0 now supports the ArcMap 9.2 platform and adds increased ability to import and tailor information, depict even more realistic land use scenarios, and model the effects of future scenarios on the condition of habitats, ecosystems, and other features. Another significant update, expected by mid-2009, will integrate NatureServe Vista with NOAA’s N-SPECT software, allowing NatureServe Vista to support improved aquatic feature assessment and conservation planning.

NatureServe Vista is spatial Decision Support System (DSS) software that supports a broad variety of cumulative impact, mitigation, and planning applications such as: conservation, open space, and green infrastructure planning; land use, infrastructure, and transportation planning; resource management and energy planning; and ecosystem-based management. NatureServe Vista supports a quantitative and defensible approach that utilizes science, expert opinion, community values, and GIS to enable users to create, evaluate, implement, and monitor land use and resource management scenarios. Vista operates on the popular ArcView platform and works with a number of other useful software tools to incorporate land use, economics, ecological and geophysical modeling. Vista provides a flexible approach and structure suitable for both planning and GIS experts as well as non-experts with a minimum of training and support.
