Field Trips
Tuesday morning 5:30 am - 8:30 am
Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program biologist will lead an early morning birding foray to Michaux State Forest and Big Pine Flats. Birding opportunities will include scrub oak barrens and dry-oak heath forests along the Appalachian Trail, cool hemlock ravines, vernal pools and acidic cold water seeps with patches of northern bog plant species. 15 people $20

Gettysburg Battlefield Restoration Tour
Tour the park with Gettysburg National Military Park natural resources manager Zach Bolitho and meet with National Park Service historians as they describe recent efforts to restore the battlefield to its 1863 appearance. Zach and park historians will describe efforts to advance wise natural resource management in the context of the cultural and historical mission of the Gettysburg National Military Park. 15 people $25 - 10 spots still available!
Mount Cydonia Vernal Pools
Betsy Leppo of the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program will lead a field trip through a vernal pool complex at Mount Cydonia. This complex is a regionally important breeding area for spotted and marbled salamanders, wood frogs, tree frogs and spring peepers. While the salamanders will be done breeding by late April, singing frogs may still be heard while strolling through the woods on a well-developed trail system. 15 people $25 - 3 spots still available!
Catoctin Mountain Park
Greg Podniesinski of the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program will lead a recreational hike at Catoctin Mountain Park including a visit to Thurmont Vista, Wolf rock and Chimney Rock. Time permitting, a short hike to Cunningham Falls in adjacent Cunningham State Park may also be included. Catoctin Mountain Park is also home to the President's retreat, Camp David, as well as the former site of a bootleg whisky still operation. Filled
Informal birding field trips will be organized for Monday and Wednesday mornings for the Gettysburg battlefield.
