Data Collection and Modeling

Data Collection and Modeling training sessions focus on building knowledge and skills that improve the quality of data collected in the field, and subsequently processed for species and ecosystems. These sessions include species identification workshops, mapping species and ecosystems, and training on citizen science data collection protocols.

Identification Workshop

NatureServe offers workshops on field identification of specific species groups. Workshops in the past have focused on the identification and status assessment of bumble bees and other high priority species.

Mapping Species and Ecosystems

Module A: Learn about field protocols and tools for recording field observations of species and natural community types.  You will also learn about observation data standards and techniques for confidently recording observations with precision and accuracy.

Module B: Learn how to identify and delineate an Element Occurrence using NatureServe’s data management methods and system (Biotics 5). This module covers techniques for processing observations into source features and element occurrences for species and natural community types.

Module C: Learn about methods and tools for species and habitat distribution modeling and the software tools and techniques for building spatial models to predict distributions.

Module D: Learn about methods and tools for vegetation and land cover mapping using remotely sensed data and field observations as well as software tools and techniques for building spatial models of current land cover maps that reflect standard ecological classifications.

Citizen Science

Citizen science encourages the public to take an active part in creating information about our natural word by aligning their interests and labor with those of professional scientists.
