What sound does a frog make? This one might surprise you! The sheep frog (Hypopachus variolosus) is named for the bleating sound that it makes, which sounds just like a sheep! This species is common in Pacific and Caribbean lowlands from southern Texas to Costa Rica.

The red-legged salamander (Plethodon shermani), named for its striking red legs, is found in forests in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The good news for this vulnerable (G3) species is that much of its range occurs in Nantahala National Forest, which provides a degree of protection for its habitat.

The Pacific treefrog (Hyliola regilla) is one of the most abundant amphibians in the Western United States. Although their small size can make them hard to spot, most people will recognize their creaky 'advertisement' call, which males utilize during the long mating season to entice females.

The hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) is the largest salamander in the United States, averaging 12-15 inches in length! Due to its appearance and size, locals have come up with a colorful variety of names for this unusual species: “mud devil”, “devil dog”, “ground puppy”, “snot otter”, “lasagna lizard”, and “Allegheny alligator".
