This report summarizes the approach for classifying and describing natural upland and wetland ecological system types across Latin America and the Caribbean. The report describes more than 800 types that characterize the natural, unconverted portions of the landscape. We document ways to apply these ecological classifications for conservation assessment, ecological inventory, mapping, land management, and ecological monitoring.
The classification presented in this report has provided the basis for NatureServe and partners to develop, refine, and apply this regional component of the International Ecological Systems Classification.

Clasificación de Sistemas Ecológicos de América Latina y el Caribe
Desde 2003, NatureServe ha mantendido una clasificación de sistemas ecológicos terrestres de América Latina y el Caribe. Este Informe resume los metodos para clasificar and describir cerca de 800 sistemas ecológicos naturales. Documentamos también las aplicaciones de estos sistemas ecológicos para evaluaciones de conservación, inventarios ecológicos, mapeo, manejo del suelo y monitoreo ecológico.
La clasificación en curso, presentada en este informe servirá como base a NatureServe para facilitar el desarrollo y refinamiento ya en proceso, de los componentes latinoamericanos y caribeños de una Clasificación Internacional de Sistemas Ecológicos.
