Adopt the mountain avens

Geum peckii

Imperiled according to NatureServe

Endangered in Canada

Habitat: Alpine streams, rocky heath-meadows, and in Nova Scotia, sea-level bogs.

Mountain avens are an herbaceous perennial flower in the rose family that blooms from June to August before their typically green leaves turn a striking crimson color in autumn. While they don’t persist through the winter, instead dying to the ground, the same plant will regrow new stems and leaves in the spring year after year. They prefer the harsh alpine climate of high-altitude riverbanks and lake shores, where their bright yellow flowers stand in stark contrast to the surrounding gray and green. Mountain avens are a common sight in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where they grow abundantly. However, their only other known location is in Novia Scotia, making them endemic to the Mideastern corner of North America. NatureServe ranks mountain avens as globally imperiled (G2), due in part to their restricted geographic range and in part to threats from road maintenance, land development, and habitat degradation by humans and other encroaching species.
